So how do you become a Sport Pilot CFI?

First, you must be a Sport Pilot or higher with Weight-Shift Sport Pilot logbook endorsements. Then you must meet the following requirements:

  1. New Instructor (not a current CFI)
  2. Current CFI or Sport Pilot CFI in another class/category aircraft.
  3. Resources:
    1. To prepare for the Knowledge Test:
      1. King Schools Sport Pilot Knowledge Test Course if you need a complete ground school solution, or
      2. Sport Pilot Prepware & Book from Adventure Productions, if you just need a refresher
    2. To prepare for the Practical or Proficiency Checkride:
      1. Practical Test Standards with Change 1
      2. Latest FAR/AIM
      3. Sport Pilot Checkride book
      4. Sport Pilot Checkride DVD
      5. FAA-H-8083-25, Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
      6. FAA-H-8083-3A, Airplane Flying Handbook
      7. FAA-H-8083-9, Aviation Instructor's Handbook
      8. Cincinnati Sectional Chart
      9. AFD-NE (Northeast Airport Facilities Directory)

Don't let this "laundry list" scare you.  View the Checkride DVD and study the Checkride book and PTS diligently.  Study the Sectional Chart legends carefully so that you know your way around a sectional chart.  As you go through the PTS you should note that every section references one of the resources above.  You should review the references well enough so that you know where to  find the information you need.  Remember, the Practical is open book so you don't have to memorize everything -- just know where to go to find the answer.

You should know that Precision Windsports has a qualified Sport Pilot CFI and Instructor Examiner along with an N-numbered aircraft, so we are ideally suited to help you make your transition to Sport Pilot no matter where you fall in the processes described below.

New Instructor:

  1. Become a Weight Shift Sport Pilot.
  2. Read FAR 61.401-431 for the requirements.  As an instructor you must know the FARs so now is a good time to get started.
  3. You'll need 150 hours of total flight time of which 50 hours are in a trike (10 cross country and 15 as PIC).  Click here for details.
  4. Practice the Practical Test Standard Maneuvers (click here to download) and make sure you are prepared for the oral portion.
  5. Take instruction from a SP-CFI  to learn how to teach and fly from the back seat and to go over the oral portion of the practical.
  6. Go to an FAA Test Center and take your written Sport Pilot Weight-Shift Knowledge Test and the Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) test.  We recommend you use King Schools Sport Pilot to prepare for this test and receive the required endorsement.
  7. Go to a Sport Pilot Instructor Examiner (SFIE) with an N-numbered trike (such as Precision Windsports) and take the PTS (must be within 60 days of getting your SP-CFIs endorsement).

Current CFIs and/or Sport Pilot CFIs in another category aircraft

See FAR 61.419 and 61.429 for requirements.  The bottom line is that you don't have to see an examiner; just two CFIs.  The first one does the training and the second the checkride.  You also do not need to take any additional written tests.

Summary

Remember, that as a CFI candidate you are being evaluated on your ability to teach as well as fly.  So be prepared for questions on the practical that start with "how would you teach me to do ...?"  The practical test must be done in an N-numbered aircraft.  And finally, for those of you pre-Sep 04 transitioning BFIs, you need to get your checkride done by Jan 31, 2008 to receive full credit for all that you have acheived to date under the ultralight rules.
