AirBorne’s S-LSA Plans & Registration Process

On December 20, 2005 the Australian equivalent of our FAA, the Civil Aviation Safety Agency (CASA), approved the US LSA standard for Australian use and authorized AirBorne to issue S-LSA “Statements of Compliance” for new XT trikes (the XT-912 and XT-582) based on the Australian/US bi-lateral certification agreements.  Based on this authorization AirBorne expects to ship the first S-LSA certifiable XTs in February 2006.

The X series documents (Redback, Outback, and Classic models) require more work to bring them up to the XT standards.  However, AirBorne is already working these issues aggressively.

So practically speaking, how does an aircraft become a registered S-LSA airplane in the States?  To register a new trike as an S-LSA the following occurs:

  • AirBorne provides:
    • Aircraft Operating Instructions (LSA speak for Pilot’s Operating Handbook or POH)
    • Aircraft Maintenance and Inspection Procedures
    • Manufacturer’s Statement of Compliance
    • Aircraft’s flight training supplement (highlights features unique to a particular aircraft model)
    • Affidavit of Ownership (Form 8050-88a) with "First Option" filled out and notorized.
    • Bill of Sale to their dealer (Form 8050-2).
    • Statement of non-registration in the country of origin (letter from the registration official that the aircraft has never been registered)
  • The AirBorne Dealer can:
    • Register the aircraft as an S-LSA by Submitting to the Aircraft Registry Office:
      • 8050-2 (Bill of Sale from Manufacturer to Dealer),
      • 8050-88a (Affidavit of Ownership filled out by Manufacturer),
      • 8050-1 (Aircraft Registration application), and
      • Statement of Non-registration.
    • Arrange the FAA or DAR inspection for the Airworthiness Certificate and supply the:
      • 8130-6d (Airworthiness Application)
      • Statement of Compliance from the manufacturer in which the manufacturer certifies the aircraft meets ASTM standards for LSA
      • Letter of Authorization from the manufacturer stating that the dealer is an authorized representative of the company and authorized to reassemble the aircaft.
      • Aircraft's new registration received from the FAA.

At this point the aircraft is now a registered S-LSA and is treated as any other aircraft for the purposes of sale and new owner registration. When the dealer sells a registered S-LSA he provides the new owner with a Bill of Sale (AC Form 8050-2), which the owner submits with his AC Form 8050-1 (Aircraft Registration form) to transfer the aircraft registration to the new owner's name.
